WHAT TO WEAR FOR FAMILY PHOTOS IN GEELONG

The good news — autumn is one of the easiest (and most beautiful) seasons to dress for photos.
Think soft layers, warm tones, and pieces that feel like you… just slightly elevated.
Here’s how to approach styling your autumn photoshoot so your images feel natural, connected, and timeless.
Start with mum
Mum, we always begin with your outfit.
Choose something you feel comfortable in, but also a little special. A piece you don’t wear every day, but still feels like you when you put it on.
Flowy dresses, soft knits, or relaxed sets work beautifully for autumn photoshoots. Movement, texture and shape photograph so well in this season.
Once you’ve chosen your outfit, build everyone else around you.
Keep colours soft and connected
For autumn photoshoots in Geelong, the Surf Coast and the Bellarine (where we know the weather is often chilly!), I recommend sticking to a warm, neutral palette.
Think:
- creams, beige, soft whites
- warm browns and tan
- muted or darker olive greens
- soft pink, rust or dusty tones
Avoid anything too bright or overly bold. The goal is for your family to feel cohesive, without matching exactly.
Layers make the photo
Autumn is all about texture.
Chunky knits, cardigans, scarves, linen, cotton - these layers add depth and warmth to your images without needing to over-style.
They also give you something to do during your session. Wrapping up, holding onto each other, adjusting sleeves… it all adds to that natural, connected feel.
Comfort matters (especially for little ones)
If your children feel good, everything else flows.
Barefoot on the beach, soft fabrics, nothing too tight or itchy. The more relaxed they are, the more genuine your photos will feel.
Autumn sessions are perfect for this - cooler weather means no overheating, no rushing, just a slower, more comfortable experience.
Location and light
Most of my autumn sessions are held outdoors around Geelong, the Surf Coast and the Bellarine Peninsula, using soft natural light just before sunset or at sunrise.
This golden hour light pairs beautifully with layered, neutral outfits and creates that warm, glowing finish you see in my work.
